Tanning Lotions and Body Lotions: Proper Application Techniques
Almost everyone has experienced a sad story using
tanning lotions and body moisturizers - from allergies to uneven skin coloring. But applying lotion is not as simple as putting it on your hands and rubbing it all over your body. Even moisturizing and
body lotions require some technique in order to get the most benefit. Here is a compilation of expert advice from skin care professionals.

Body Lotions – Advice from the Experts
-
Read the instruction manual of the
tanning lotion or
body lotion carefully - it's important to know exactly how the manufacturer intended the product to be used. If the product says that it was not intended for those with sensitive skin, you should take their word for it. Pay special attention to the warning section, and make sure that the lotion is safe for your skin type.
-
If this is your first time to try the
tanning lotion or
body lotion you just bought, always test it on a small area of your skin first. There's no telling if you're skin is not allergic to it unless you try it on first. Select an area of your skin that is not visible, and relatively thick, such as your thighs, feet or elbows. If all is well, proceed using the product on your entire body. -
When applying lotions, make sure to exfoliate your skin first. Doing so removes dead skin cells, allowing the
tanning lotion or
body lotion to penetrate deeper. This is particularly important to note when applying
tanning lotion as it helps promote a clearer and more even tone. For a moisturizing
body lotion, this increases the hydrating effect of the product. Make sure to pay attention to body areas where skin is typically thicker, such as the elbows and feet.
-
Always apply less than what the product suggests. A
tanning lotion for instance will always recommend higher doses to show how potent and effective the product is. A lot of people then become sensitive to these products because of over-application. Less is ok, too much is not.
-
For
tanning lotion applications, only use small quantities. Skin types react differently to products. It's hard to go back once you're over-tanned. Use thin applications and view the results. If more is needed, then simply apply another thin coat. This will also result in a much even and natural looking tan.
-
Do not use
body lotion for your face. Your face is much more sensitive than skin in other areas of your body - you might develop a rash when you use
body lotion products. There are typically variants of these products made especially for the facial area. If none exists, make sure to apply the thinnest coat on your face, and to not leave it there for too long. -
Shave your legs at least a day before putting on
tanning lotion. This exfoliates the skin and allows the lotion to more evenly coat the skin. However, make sure not to do it just before applying the tanning or moisturizing lotion, as shaving can produce some small unseen cuts on your skin. This can get irritated with topical applications, so it's best to wait a day for them to heal.
