If you have oily skin, this probably runs in the family. The amount of oil that an individual produces is determined by genetics. Hormones and an "end organ response" are responsible for the excessive oil production. The oil gland, or sebaceous gland, is the end organ that is acted upon by hormones.

 

While many people have the same level of hormones, they produce different amounts of oil. An individual's oil glands respond differently. Adolescents often have oily skin problems. This is because during adolescence, there are surges in the level of sex hormones, known as androgens. The androgens enlarge and stimulate the oil glands, or sebaceous glands, causing production of more sebum.

If you have oily skin, take active skin care measures to keep your skin pores from getting clogged and forming acne lesions. Don't use very hot water, harsh soaps or cleansers for washing as these can dry and irritate your skin. Be selective on topical acne medications since many have a drying effect on oily skin. Pick a mild cleanser which cleanses without drying your skin.

 

If you are using cosmetics, avoid oil based ones. These will only aggravate oily skin and create further skin blemishes. Use water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics, instead. Always remove your makeup before going to bed. Avoid cold creams and lotions - they leave a greasy film on your skin. Watch what you eat! Some doctors believe a reduced intake of iodine, fish and iodized salt will be good while treating acne. Have a regular relaxation program. Stress triggers higher oil production which may lead to acne flare-ups.
