Cosmetic Preservatives - Prolonging the (Shelf) Life of Your Favorite Cosmetic

Cosmetic preservatives are used widely in the cosmetics industry because they prolong the 'life span' of a product. Preservatives are added in order to protect cosmetics from being contaminated by bacteria, moulds and yeasts. Without any kind of cosmetic preservative, microorganisms would spoil the product quickly and mean millions of dollars worth of losses to manufacturers.

Some consumers who prefer to go for organic products then turn to preservative-free products like petroleum free moisturizer or simply purchase only 100% natural or organic cosmetics. As a consumer, there are some ordinary things you can take note of that may give you a clue to just how much preservative is in the product you use or wish to purchase.

Packaging - The less access the consumer has to the contents of a package, the less chance that the contents will be contaminated.  This means that the cosmetic preservative needed will be less. Packaging products in a wide-mouth jar allows easy access for dirty fingers. So next time, be a bit more conscious of the packaging of the product.

Cosmetic Labels - Many manufacturers do mention the preservatives used in their labels. Of course, trying to memorize these things can be daunting! So just be aware of the most harmful preservatives and see if that is one of the ingredients of the product.

Company Policy - Many companies have policies specifying what cosmetic preservative or preservatives will be used in their products. You can quickly know about these by visiting the sites of popular cosmetics manufacturers.
