Cosmetics Aerosols - The Dangers of Using Aerosol

Cosmetics aerosols are products in self-pressurized containers such as hair sprays. They can be dangerous because of the solvents found in these cosmetic products. It is quite alarming to note that about 99% of all home care and skin products (yes, these include cosmetics) contain toxic ingredients.

The danger of using aerosols is that the harmful solvent gets into the air as we spray. Once in the air, we can easily absorb it by breathing them into our lungs or simply thru contact with our skin. There are different types of solvents in cosmetics but one such solvent to avoid is benzene.

Found in aerosol sprays, paints, spot removers, and perfumes, exposure to benzene occurs when people using products that contain toluene breathe it in or absorb it through skin contact. Toluene causes dizziness, lightheadedness and in serious conditions cause unconsciousness.

Below are a few tips on how to prevent problems due to cosmetic products.

  1. Don't use hair spray in aerosol cans.

  2. Aerosol cans contain propellant gases that are flammable. So keep aerosol cans away from sources of heat such as open flames, candles and cigarettes.

  3. Don't overuse cosmetics such as perfume or aftershave.

  4. Use non-aerosol deodorants and antiperspirants such as solid, cream, or roll-ons.

  5. Use shaving soap for shaving rather than foam products in aerosol cans because aerosol cans use propellant gases like butane.

  6. Be aware of the kinds of chemicals used in cosmetic products you patronize.

  7. Only go to hair salons that are well ventilated.
